Floating Heart Valentine’s Day Hairstyle

The Floating Heart Hairstyle - great tutorial from Hair by Lori

I am such a big fan of heart hairstyles.  I know that I keep saying it.  While heart hairstyles are perfect for Valentine’s Day, there is just something that is so sweet about them, they can be worn year round.

As Hope is getting a little older, I wanted to come up with a heart hairstyle that is just a bit more grown up looking than some of the other heart styles that we’ve done in the past.  Today’s floating heart hairstyle is just that – a little more grown up and mature looking.  It can be worn with the hair straight down, with curls, or even incorporated into a ponytail or braid hairstyle.  It can certainly be done on little ones too, but I think that the older girls will love this simple heart hairstyle.  It’s so easy that you can easily do it on yourself!  Moms – feel free to give it a try or share this page with your tween or teen.

How To Do a Floating Heart Hairstyle – Valentine’s Day Hairstyle:

Tools you will need: hairbrush, duck bill clip,  a couple of clear elastics, topsy tail and (optional) curling wand, Hot Iron Holster, and hairspray.

Time to complete: 5 minutes

Skill Level:  Easy

Step 1.  Create a deep part off to one side.  Pull the top section of hair up (from the center of the head) and clip out of the way temporarily.

Step 2.  Pick up a small section of hair from under that top section, about an inch and a half back from the face.  The section will be about an inch or two square.  Secure with a clear elastic.

Step 3.  Take your topsy tail and slide it underneath the clear elastic.

Step 4.  Pull the hair from the elastic down through the loop of the topsy tail.  Gently pull on the end of the topsy tail to pull the hair and loop up and through.

Step 5.  Add hairspray or water to the hair in the elastic if you’d like to help prevent flyaways.

Step 6.  Let down the hair above that section that you clipped out of the way in step 1.  Guide it so that it falls naturally around the hair in the elastic.

Step 7.  Take the hair in the elastic and divide it into two equal parts.  Twist both parts toward the head (this means they will be twisting in different directions, one clockwise, the other counter clockwise.)

Step 8.  Bring the ends of the sections together at the bottom so that it forms a heart shape.

Step 9.   Pick up a tiny section of hair from underneath that first section you made.  Secure the heart to this small section of hair with a clear elastic.  This will help anchor the heart and keep it from moving throughout the day.

Step 10.  Finish the style to your liking.  I chose to curl the rest of Hope’s hair and then finished with hairspray.

You’re done!
